Sino-Vietnam railway of Hekou to Lao Cai and Pinxiang to Tongdeng
formally resumed opening.

At the invitation of Chairman of Vietnamese Congress Nong Due
Manh, Qiaoshi, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National
People's Congress (NPC) of China, paid a five-day official and
friendly visit to Vietnam
April 8th, 1997
China and Vietnam opened a railway passenger transport line from
Kunming to Hanoi.
July 14th - 18th, 1997
At the invitation of Chinese General Secretary of the CPC and
State President Jiang Zemin, Do Muoi, General Secretary of the
CPV Central Committee paid an official and friendly visit to China.
October 19th, 1998
China and Vietnam signed the ¡°Border Trade Agreement¡±.
October 19th - 24th, 1998
Vietnamese Premier Phan Van Khai visited China.
February 25th - March 2nd,
1999
General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee Le Kha Phieu paid
an official and friendly visit to China.
February 25th, 1999
Chinese General Secretary of the CPC and State President Jiang
Zemin met with Le Kha Phieu. Both sides were of unanimous view
that the border territory issues must be settled as soon as possible
through negotiation. The two sides also agreed to sign the Sino-Vietnamese
Land Border Treaty in 1999, and settle the dispute over demarcation
of Beibu Bay within 2000.
May 18th - 28th, 1999
At the invitation of the Central Committee of the CPC and State
Council, Nguyen Tan Dung, commissioner of the Political Bureau
of the CPV and vice-premier, led a CPV and government delegation
to China and met with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and Deputy Prime
Minister Wu Bangguo respectively.
October 8th - 15th, 1999
At the invitation of the CPC Central Committee, Vietnamese CPV
Political Bureau Standing Committee Member Pham The Duyet led
a CPV delegation to China. During this visit, Chinese NPC Chairman
Li Peng and CPPCC Chairman Li Ruihuan respectively met with the
delegation. Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao held talks with Pham
The Duyet.
December 1st - 4th, 1999
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji paid an official visit to Vietnam.
December 30th, 1999
Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and Vietnamese Deputy Prime
Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam signed the ¡°Sino-Vietnam
Land Border Treaty¡± on behalf of the two countries.
